hp_yule_balls are up so I can now confess to having written The Dragon and the Pygmy Puff for ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif)
softly_sweetly.
The fic was one of the first fics posted, on December 1, which was a nice surprise for me. It was a bit unfair as well, though, because I had to wait all of December before I was allowed to say something! The fic got so many wonderful comments and every time I saw it rec'd I squeed my head off. I kept biting my nails to stop myself from shouting "It's me, I wrote that!" ^__^ But with the reactions the fic got, it's no surprise I avoided the annual December depression.
Writing "The Dragon and the Pygmy Puff" was really an experience. Because I had planned to write something different at first. When I readsoftly_sweetly's wishlist for the exchange and read her list of pairings, I thought to try one of my SS/HP/DM bunnies. A creature!fic with some (forced) bonding thrown in. Although I had promised myself to never ever write those three again on a deadline. But they were the only pairing on her list that I had any experience with, so I tried.
It didn't work. At all. I took another look at the wishlist, and when I came to the kinks and read "tattoo" ... the bunny pounced. I can't describe it any other way. I knew what to write, which kinks to include, the only question left was Harry's tattoo.
Some people said they were sceptical about the Pygmy Puff tattoo. I was a bit nervous about that, too. At first, I'd planned to make it a dragon or a Hippogryff. But as Harry reasons in the fic, that would be something everyone expected of him and I thought, no. We'll try something different. Then I remembered Romilda Vane and the humming Pygmy Puffs in WWW, and Harry got a Pygmy Puff tattoo. ^__^
It was a fun fic to write. Well, to plot, anyway. It's a surprise I wasn't run over by a car I was so distracted the couple of days I played the fic out in my head. Writing my vision down wasn't always easy (as usual), and the smut drove me crazy (also as usual. I whined about it before, I can't write dirty talk. Harry's floundering in the fic is all me). But I had fun outside my usual pairings, and my recipient liked it, so all the trouble was more than worth it.
Something that makes me especially proud is the fact that so many people with RL tattoos liked the tattoo bits in the fic. Because I'm a wuss and afraid of needles, so I don't have a tattoo (and I don't plan on getting one. Ever) and lack the first-hand experience. Having readers tell me they felt reminded of the time they got their own tattoo therefore is gratifying and a huge compliment.
